Pocketable footage a phone or action cam can't match

DJI Osmo Pocket 3 Vlogging Camera

A 1-inch sensor on a real 3-axis gimbal, in something that fits a jacket pocket. The sensor is the point: it holds up in a dim room and gives genuine shallow depth of field, neither of which an action cam can do, and the lens is a natural field of view with no fisheye. The 2-inch screen rotates to face you and powers the camera as it turns. Shoots 4K at 120fps.

Pros

  • ✓ 1-inch sensor holds up in low light and gives real shallow depth of field — an action cam cannot
  • ✓ Built-in 3-axis gimbal: walk and shoot without watching where you point it
  • ✓ Screen rotates to face you and turns the camera on as it does
  • ✓ Natural field of view with no fisheye distortion to correct later
  • ✓ 4K/120fps, fast autofocus and subject tracking in something jacket-pocket sized

Cons

  • – It bricks itself on the fifth power-on until you activate it in DJI's app — and that app is not on Google Play, so some Android phones refuse to install it at all. Check yours before buying
  • – Battery is the other complaint: plan on a power bank past about an hour of recording
  • – Not waterproof and genuinely fragile — the opposite trade-off to an action cam
  • – No tripod thread on the body; the 1/4-20 lives on a snap-on base you must keep
  • – Onboard audio is only adequate — owners pair it with a DJI Mic

AKASO EK7000 4K Action Camera

Finding out whether you'll actually use an action camera

The cheapest honest way into action footage. It shoots 4K30 and 20MP stills, and arrives with the parts a premium camera charges extra for: waterproof housing, wrist remote, two batteries with a dual charger, and a box of helmet, bike and board mounts. Not the camera to buy once you know you need one — the camera to buy while you find out.

DJI Osmo Action 4 Adventure Combo

Filming where you would not risk a normal camera

The opposite trade-off to a pocket camera: waterproof out of the box, magnetically clipped to a helmet or a chest harness, and stabilised well enough that a bike descent looks like a dolly shot. The 1/1.3-inch sensor is large for an action camera, so low light holds up better than the category usually manages. The Adventure Combo is the pack worth having — three batteries, a charging case and a 1.5m extension rod.
