Filming where you would not risk a normal camera

DJI Osmo Action 4 Adventure Combo

The opposite trade-off to a pocket camera: waterproof out of the box, magnetically clipped to a helmet or a chest harness, and stabilised well enough that a bike descent looks like a dolly shot. The 1/1.3-inch sensor is large for an action camera, so low light holds up better than the category usually manages. The Adventure Combo is the pack worth having — three batteries, a charging case and a 1.5m extension rod.

Pros

  • ✓ Waterproof with no housing, and the magnetic mount clips on blind to a helmet
  • ✓ RockSteady holds a bike descent steady on broken ground
  • ✓ 1/1.3-inch sensor is big for an action cam, so dusk footage stays usable
  • ✓ Front and rear touchscreens, so you can frame yourself while filming
  • ✓ The Adventure pack adds three batteries, a charging case and a 1.5m rod — the parts you would buy anyway

Cons

  • – It overheats and stops recording — one long-term owner hits it at 20 to 40 minutes in ambient temperatures of only 25 to 27°C
  • – Same DJI activation trap as the Pocket 3: register it within the first few power-ups or it locks into a loop
  • – Waterproof does not mean saltwater-proof; owners report trouble after deeper, longer sea dunks
  • – Poor vibration isolation — a handlebar mount transmits road buzz into both the image and the microphone
  • – 4K files are enormous: roughly 30 GB for 45 minutes, so a 128 GB card covers very few outings

AKASO EK7000 4K Action Camera

Finding out whether you'll actually use an action camera

The cheapest honest way into action footage. It shoots 4K30 and 20MP stills, and arrives with the parts a premium camera charges extra for: waterproof housing, wrist remote, two batteries with a dual charger, and a box of helmet, bike and board mounts. Not the camera to buy once you know you need one — the camera to buy while you find out.

DJI Osmo Pocket 3 Vlogging Camera

Pocketable footage a phone or action cam can't match

A 1-inch sensor on a real 3-axis gimbal, in something that fits a jacket pocket. The sensor is the point: it holds up in a dim room and gives genuine shallow depth of field, neither of which an action cam can do, and the lens is a natural field of view with no fisheye. The 2-inch screen rotates to face you and powers the camera as it turns. Shoots 4K at 120fps.
