A desk framed tight on one person, with two mics instead of one

A 1080p30 webcam built narrower than most budget cameras: 90° of view rather than the 110° that puts your whole room in the shot, through a 5-layer anti-glare lens, with two omnidirectional noise-reduction mics and a cover in the box. It is easy to live with — setup runs 572 positive mentions to 14. What the reviews are far less kind about is colour and longevity, and the numbers on both are in the cons below rather than buried.

A Logitech at a no-name price, with the privacy shutter built in

The cheapest camera Logitech puts the Brio name on, and the name is the thing to be careful about: this is 1080p, not the 4K Brio also in this subcategory, at a small fraction of its price. What it does bring is a sliding privacy shutter — which the C920x does not have — RightLight auto light balance, and zoom and framing you can adjust from the Logi Options+ app rather than living with whatever the lens sees. Plug and play over USB-A, f/2.0.

Replacing a laptop's own camera for the least money that still counts as an upgrade

A 1080p30 webcam with a glass lens, a built-in mic and a physical cover that slides over the lens when you are not on a call — which the Logitech C920x beside it does not have at more than twice the price. Plug and play over USB with no drivers on effectively any desktop OS. The lens is fixed focus, sharp between roughly 20 inches and 13 feet, so it is set up for a desk and does not chase anything outside that range.
